Van Gogh, Manet, and Matisse: The Art of the Flower

This exhibition is the first major American exhibition to consider the French floral still life across the 19th century.  It features approximately 70 flower paintings by more than 30 artists, including well-known painters such as Eugène Delacroix, Gustave Courbet, Henri Fantin-Latour, Édouard Manet, Vincent van Gogh and Henri Matisse, as well as less familiar figures such as Antoine Berjon and Simon Saint-Jean.

Western Maryland Blues Festival

Upperville Colt & Horse Show

Founded in 1853, The Upperville Colt & Horse Show is the oldest horse show in the United States. Capital Pride

Lafayette's Hermione Voyage

Yorktown, Virginia

In April 2015, after a period of sea trials and training, the recreation of Lafayette's frigate Hermione will set sail for the USA. The journey will start from the mouth of the River Charente, in Port des Barques, where Lafayette boarded on March 10, 1780. The transatlantic crossing is expected to take 27 days in total, before making landfall at Yorktown, Virginia. As the Hermione moves up the Eastern seaboard, it will be accompanied by a range of pier side activities. In some ports activities will include a traveling exhibition and a heritage village that will be accessible to the public.

Independence Day Celebration

Chincoteague Pony Swim

The town of Chincoteague is known worldwide for its annual Pony Penning & Auction. Every July, “Saltwater Cowboys” round up the wild ponies from Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague Island and let them swim across the channel to Chincoteague Island. The first foal to come ashore will be named King or Queen Neptune and will be given away in a raffle drawing at the carnival grounds later in the day.  After swimming the short distance across the channel, the ponies will rest for approximately 45 minutes to an hour before “parading” to the carnival grounds on Main Street. The carnival will open at 7:00 PM with rides, games and lots of good food.

Horse Shows in the Sun: Constitution Classic

The Maryland Renaissance Festival is the second largest Renaissance Festival in the country with more than 1,300 participants and 280,000 guests per season. The festival's 25 acre English village offers 140 craft and specialty shops, 42 food and beverage emporiums, games, attractions, displays, 11 stages of ever changing entertainment with shows repeated throughout the day, and a 3,000 seat jousting arena. The festival is open Saturdays and Sundays, late August through October.

Labor Day Capitol Concert
