Washington DC offers 100 free attractions this summer
Anyone feeling the pinch this summer and looking to discover some of the United State’s richest history, most historic landmarks and fascinating attractions will be pleased to find that Washington, DC will be celebrating the summer months by offering 100 free ‘must see' activities, attractions and performances across the capital.
Around town. Explore the architecture of the historic Old Post Office Pavilion on Pennsylvania Avenue and enjoy 360 degree views across the city from the top of this 315 foot high clock tower. Alternatively, discover the National Gallery's sculpture garden or the public art and international gardens at the National Arboretum.
Jazz, Ballet and the Opera. Experience ballet, music and magic performances every Saturday at the National Theatre or free opera and choir performances at the National Gallery every Sunday. Jazz fans will be enticed by ‘Take Five!’ performances, free every month at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Family fun. Fans of furry creatures should visit giant pandas at the National Zoo and the tiny red pandas on the Asia Trail. Alternatively, discover the beautiful, National Mall, with a free family walking tour. For something a little different, see real money being made with a tour of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
Love modern art? Explore America’s first museum of modern art, The Phillips Collection (free Tue-Fri) or over 4000 fascinating artworks at the National Museum of Women in Arts. Alternatively, wander through the worlds largest and most complex light sculpture, Multiverse, at the National Gallery on a moving walkway.
Interested in history? Discover the US’s only complete collection of presidential portraits outside the White House at the National Portrait Gallery, before checking out the original Declaration of Independence at the National Archives. Later, visitors may choose to discover a different side to DC with Cultural Tourism DC’s free self-guided walking tour through the capital’s neighbourhoods.
