America's Culture Capital

The Capital Region is renowned for its fascinating cultural attractions, diverse dining and world-class shopping. Here are a few highlights to get you started.

Artful Museums & Cultural Gems

The region’s art and culture is ever-evolving. Be entertained and inspired in the Washington, DC metro area, where the world-famous Smithsonian offers 17 museums. Among them are the American Art Museum, National Museum of the American Indian, National Museum of Natural History, and National Air and Space Museum.  For live theatre and music, visit the historic National Theatre or the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

In Maryland, explore downtown Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, a hub for culture and entertainment. Nearby, view thought-provoking art at the American Visionary Art Museum and Baltimore Museum of Art. Experience the state’s rich history and maritime roots in Annapolis, Baltimore and St. Mary’s City.

Virginia’s notable art attractions include the ultra-modern Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke and the glass collection of the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk. In Richmond, visit the Virginia State Capitol, designed by Thomas Jefferson.

Internationally Inspired Cuisine

Diverse flavours make for a true epicurean journey. In Washington, DC, enjoy Indian food with experimental twists at Rasika or upscale pan-Asian fare at The Source. For masterfully prepared Spanish tapas, head to one of the metro area’s famous Jaleo restaurants. For a supremely urban experience, dine at Sushi Taro, which sources fish from Tokyo’s famed Tsukiji market. In Baltimore, Maryland, enjoy authentic Italian at Cinghiale, or indulge in a fusion of French and Southern American cuisine at Charleston. Find Parisian flair at the Can Can Brasserie in Richmond, Virginia.

For a satisfying combination of culture and cuisine, consider taking a food tour. In the Washington, DC area, DC Metro Food Tours mixes neighbourhood walking tours with food stops. In Virginia and Maryland, check out the Virginia Beach Boardwalk Food Tour and Charm City Food Tours, both organised by Coastal Food Tours. All across the region, be sure to indulge in delicious seafood, and especially blue crab.

Sophisticated Shopping

International retailers and unique boutiques offer everything from designer clothing to original art and gifts. In Washington, DC, stroll the sidewalks of Georgetown to find popular chains like Banana Republic and Ralph Lauren mixed with locally owned shops. The area around U Street, Shaw and Logan Circle – also known as The Arts District – features eclectic boutiques with trendy clothes, shoes and accessories.

Just across from DC in Alexandria, Virginia, buy art direct from artists at The Torpedo Factory Art Center. In Northern Virginia, Tysons Corner Center is one of America’s largest malls and a major shopping hub with more than 500 stores. Across the street, Tysons Galleria offers luxurious brands such as Chanel and Versace. Nearby, the Shops at Fairfax Square offers lavish choices like Hermes, Louis Vuitton and Tiffany.

In Maryland, downtown Baltimore’s Inner Harbor features Harborplace & The Gallery, with national name-brand stores and specialty shops like Swarovski and Godiva Chocolatier. Surrounding neighbourhoods like Hampden offer funky independent shops. Wander the cobblestone streets of Annapolis to find clothing boutiques, gourmet markets and jewellery stores.
