A World Of Good Taste Awaits At Maryland And Virginia Wineries And DC Dining Spots

In recent years, Maryland and Virginia wineries have evolved from experiments in grape-growing to sophisticated producers of award-winning vintages. Experience the distinctive tastes and scenic landscapes of the Capital Region by embarking on a USA winery tour of the area’s burgeoning wine-making industry.

Washington, DC:

While DC’s urban landscape doesn’t allow for wineries or vineyards, the city certainly offers plenty of places to imbibe. Wine bars are a growing trend within the District, particularly in the U Street and Dupont Circle neighborhoods. Many offer tastings and wine education courses, as well as pre-selected flights of wine or champagne.

Maryland:

The Maryland wine industry is spread out among four distinct regions: Eastern Shore, Southern Plain, Western Mountain and Piedmont Plateau, the last of which is home to the majority of the state’s vineyards. The different climate and soil types of each region cater to a diversity of grape varietals, allowing for more than 400 different wines to be produced from just 40 wineries. Although relatively young, the state’s wine industry is growing quickly, and more wineries are opening every year. To explore a sampling of Maryland USA wineries, take advantage of the Frederick Wine Trail or Mason-Dixon Wine Trail, both of which combine local history and natural beauty with delicious vintages.

Virginia:

With 190 vineyards & wineries and 18 wine trails, Virginia is the undeniable heart of the Capital Region’s wine industry, and has been named one of the top five up-and-coming wine destinations in the world by Travel & Leisure magazine. Although the first grape-growing attempts were made by the settlers in Jamestown, it is only since the 1950s that Virginia has flourished into an internationally recognized wine region. Today, wineries are spread throughout every area of the state, with the densest concentrations found within the Northern and Central regions. This makes for an easy day-long Virginia winery tour from Washington, DC, which visitors can enjoy themselves or with the aid of a hired guide and driver. Many wineries are located near historic landmarks, which can be an interesting way to pair sightseeing with taste-testing.
